AI Done Right In Creative Services

How we use AI, where we draw the AI line, and what that means for our work and your brand

Our Approach To AI

AI and LLMs are here to stay. There's no way we can stick our heads in the sand and pretend AI doesn't exist, and refusing to use it feels irresponsible. So, do we use AI? Abso-freaking-lutely. Do we use AI for everything? Oh, hell no!

AI is a tool that creates space for thinking and creativity.

Just like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Canva, Google Docs, Slack, Zoom, and every other piece of software we use to run Bourn Creative, AI is just another tool. And machine-driven tools are only as good as the humans who wield them.

We’ve spent countless hours learning what AI does well, where it falls short, and where it simply has no business being involved. That work has allowed us to build thoughtful AI-powered processes that make our work more efficient without compromising the quality or originality of our work, the strategy behind it, or the experience we create for every one of our clients.

AI takes low-level, repetitive, operational, and time-consuming work off our plates so we can spend more time building extraordinary brands and immersing ourselves in the strategic work that makes the biggest difference.

AI supports our work. It doesn't replace us.

AI can only work with the direction it’s given, and it pulls from thinking that already exists. It doesn’t understand humanity, nuance, complexity, depth, and context the way people do.

Its strength is pattern matching. It can organize information, analyze research, identify trends, connect dots across massive amounts of data, and handle repetitive tasks in a fraction of the time it would take a person. That makes it a valuable research and brainstorming partner, sounding board, development helper, and problem-solving assistant.

Here’s what AI helps us with:

  • Researching industries, competitors, markets, buyers, trends, and keywords.
  • Gathering, organizing, and analyzing information.
  • Surfacing patterns, inconsistencies, gaps, and connections.
  • Poking holes in ideas, uncovering blind spots, and identifying new opportunities.
  • Mapping buyer journeys, creating workflows, and exploring solutions.
  • Turning our notes, research, ideas, brainstorming, outlines, and messy drafts into the start of an asset we shape, refine, edit, and pour a brand’s voice, personality, and messaging into.
  • Checking work against brand guidelines, writing standards, rules, and requirements.
  • Supporting development, debugging, and technical problem-solving.

Notice what’s missing from that list:

Strategy, curiosity, design thinking, creative direction, brand voice, decision-making, client relationships, and all the little things that keep authentic humanity in the work we do and the brands we build. That’s 100% intentional. AI can’t replace decades spent helping businesses build extraordinary brands, but it can help us create results faster.

Where we draw the AI line for our work and your brand.

AI is incredibly good at some things. The work that defines, builds, and grows your brand isn’t one of them. AI cannot think like a person, feel what a person feels, or fully account for the richness and intricacies of lived experiences and candid conversations.

  • It doesn’t know your business the way we do after hours of discovery.
  • It can’t see why a particular word or phrase just feels wrong.
  • It doesn’t recognize the subtleties that make your business remarkable.
  • It can’t see how one small creative decision can change the way your entire brand is perceived.
  • It doesn’t understand why your customers choose you.
  • It can’t replicate your voice because your voice isn’t built from patterns.

Left to produce creative work on its own, AI normalizes your quirks, subdues your voice, and smooths out your edges. It dilutes personality, flattens emotion, and makes brands look, sound, and feel more alike. And we’re already seeing it play out in generic copy, recycled ideas, look-alike graphics, and work produced without the strategy or experience needed to make it effective.

You can feel it, and we freaking hate it.

We hate that businesses are losing the very things that make them different and memorable, and it’s why we refuse to accept AI slop or let AI strip the humanity and emotion from creative work and brand communication.

It’s why we have our hands in every part of the work. We define strategy, shape messaging, write and refine copy, direct creative execution, make recommendations, and obsess over every single tiny freaking detail, whether it’s a word, the kerning of a word, or a pixel.

AI Visibility And Your Brand

As more people use AI to research options and get recommendations, every brand message becomes another signal shaping whether your business gets understood, trusted, cited, and recommended.

AI makes branding more important than ever...

Committed To Ethical AI Use

Every AI tool we use has to earn its place in our workflows by improving efficiency without compromising the quality of our work, the privacy of our clients, or the experience we create.

We use AI intentionally, thoughtfully, and with clear boundaries.

We only use paid platforms that keep our work private and do not use what we input to train public AI models. Even with those safeguards in place, we do not upload proprietary business details, confidential information, project files, or documents clients share without their express permission. And if client information is useful for AI-assisted work, we anonymize or generalize it first.

We also don’t talk big, collect a check, and hand your project to a machine. Gross. Just typing that gave us the ick.

We stand behind every recommendation, strategy, design, word, and deliverable that comes from Bourn Creative. AI may help us work faster, but we always review the output, put our (or your) spin on it, and make the decisions.

As AI evolves, Bourn Creative will evolve right along with it. We will keep learning, testing new tools, and refining how we use AI and what we won’t let AI anywhere near. The tools may change. Our responsibility to use them ethically and transparently, protect client trust, and create exceptional work won’t. That’s our promise to you.
